Tesla Stops Producing Solar Roof Tiles, Powerwall Still Available on Long Island
Tesla has stopped selling its solar roof tiles, with company insiders saying that they weren’t economically viable, according to a report from Electrek.
The company will continue to produce its standard solar panel products and its market-leading Powerwall battery energy storage products.
Why Weren’t Tesla Roof Tiles a Success?
Tesla’s roof tiles were genuinely innovative. Each tile was a solar panel, making up an array that could cover an entire roof.
However, this type of design was prohibitively expensive to produce and added to the installation complexity.
Standard solar panels are typically around 65 inches x 39 inches, can be attached to stable racking systems, and can be replaced independently of the roofing surface. For most homes, traditional solar panels are just more convenient and, in most cases, more affordable than Tesla’s tiles were.
Tesla’s solar roof tiles were announced in 2016. Some industry estimates place the total lifetime number of solar tile roof installations (including Tesla and other systems) in the low thousands, compared to Tesla’s original goals of 1,000 systems per week. The company has not made an official statement, but the news has been widely reported after an initial news release by Electrek this August.
