NY Solar Incentives 2026 – Can We Match NJ’s New Energy Relief Efforts?

Best Solar Companies Near Me

New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill spent her first 24 hours in office signing several Executive Orders signaling a massive shift in the tri-state energy landscape. In a move to provide relief to New Jersey residents, Governor Sherrill signed Order 1 declaring an Electricity Affordability Emergency and freezing rate hikes. Order 2 declares a State of Emergency to direct the Board of Public Utilities to open tenders for grid-scale solar panels and battery storage systems. These were the first of six total Executive Orders signed by Governor Sherrill on January 20, 2026.

In a statement, the Governor said that “This will create the conditions to massively expand New Jersey’s power generation,” she also stated that the orders would “help lower costs”.

It’s positive news for those in New Jersey, a state that falls slightly behind New York in total solar electric capacity.

Is New York’s Solar Push Slowing?

Long Island’s solar push isn’t slowing. The One Big Beautiful Bill Act meant that we lost the 30% federal solar tax credit at the end of 2025, but New York State still offers a lucrative credit that makes solar compelling.

If you’re on Long Island and have yet to explore options for a solar installation, now is the perfect time to start.

New York’s Residential Solar Tax Credit

You can claim a percentage-based state tax credit for your Long Island solar installation:

  • The New York State Solar Energy System Equipment Credit is available to New York Residents installing solar for the first time in a primary home.
  • It is worth up to 25% of your solar panel installation. This is based on the total bill, which can also include a battery energy storage system.
  • The NY Solar tax credit can be claimed on Form IT-255 and is limited to $5,000.
  • It can be carried over for up to 5 years.

This credit will significantly reduce the actual cost of switching to solar.

Is Long Island Solar Still Worth it Today?

Residential solar on Long Island is worth more now than ever before. A high cost of living and growing inflation, combined with high electricity rates from PSEG LI, mean that solar can dramatically reduce your household spending.

Solar panels can power your home in the day, and you can export any excess energy to the grid. Your exports help to cover your consumption in the evenings when your solar panels shut down. Under Net Metering, excess production can carry over and is eventually paid out by the utility provider.

Solar makes financial sense now, and the benefits can only increase as the cost of electricity goes up.
