General Motors and Peak Energy Partner for Battery Energy Storage Projects
General Motors and Peak Energy have announced a new partnership to develop sodium-ion battery cells for grid-scale integration. GM will enjoy exclusive manufacturing rights for the battery cells used in Peak Energy storage systems in Michigan. This allows Peak Energy to increase its scale of grid storage deployments while leveraging GM’s extensive manufacturing capacity.
Battery energy storage systems have become essential for America’s energy grid. Large-scale systems can store electricity during the day and deploy it during peak times. Although often used with solar panels, these storage systems can integrate with any type of network, from wind to nuclear and natural gas to coal.
Batteries have also become invaluable for residential energy independence. Homes with solar installations can integrate solar batteries to maximize savings.
Why Are Battery Storage Systems Crucial for Energy Security?
When integrated with local grids, battery storage systems offer more energy security and potential savings.
- Large battery arrays allow grid operators to store excess production to prevent waste.
- Energy is deployed in the evening during peak demand.
- Grid-scale battery systems prevent the need for peaker plants (fossil-fuel plants used during demand spikes).
These benefits aren’t just for large power utilities; they are also applicable to homeowners on Long Island.
If you combine solar panels with a solar battery at home, you can:
- Store your excess solar production during the day.
- Deploy it in the evenings to avoid peak rates and further reduce your electricity bill.
- Send stored energy to the grid to earn credits on your utility account.
- Isolate your home from the grid during an outage and run entirely from your solar panels and battery system.
As with the grid, a home backup battery provides practical and financial benefits. You can install a battery with a new solar installation, or retrofit it to your home and connect with existing panels.
